Independent Tile & Flooring Consultation

The expert guide your flooring project actually needs

Unbiased advice on materials, installers, and design — no products to sell, no sales pressure.

Why it matters

Most flooring advice is not really advice.

Walk into any tile showroom or big-box retailer and the "free consultation" comes bundled with a sales commission. The person helping you has a quota. Their recommendation will land near the margins that benefit them most.

Online forums give you opinions with no context for your specific subfloor, climate, or traffic pattern. Contractors upsell materials they profit from. Designers add markups on product orders.

The result: homeowners spend thousands on the wrong tile, in the wrong format, installed the wrong way — and discover it months later.

The usual approach
  • Advice tied to products the retailer carries
  • Commission incentives shape every recommendation
  • Contractor bids without material context
  • No one to call when installation goes wrong
The Tessera difference
  • No products. No commissions. Completely independent.
  • Guidance built around your project, not our inventory
  • Installer vetting and bid review on your behalf
  • A trusted expert in your corner from start to finish

We work for you — not for anyone selling tile.

Tessera earns fees from clients, never from product sales or installer referrals. That independence is the foundation of every recommendation we make.

The process

How a Tessera engagement works

Four stages, each built to give you clarity and confidence before you spend a dollar.

01 Discovery

We learn your project inside out

A structured conversation about the space, the subfloor condition, your aesthetic goals, how the room is used, and what you have in mind for budget. We listen first — recommendations come only after we understand the full picture.

02 Material Guidance

A shortlist of materials that fit — nothing more

We filter the market to what genuinely suits your space: porcelain vs. natural stone, format and thickness, finish and slip rating, grout color and joint width. You receive a focused shortlist with our reasoning, not a catalog of options to overwhelm you.

03 Installer Vetting

Know who you are hiring before you sign

We review contractor bids, check credentials, and translate technical scope so you understand exactly what you are agreeing to. A low bid that skips waterproofing or uses undersized trowels costs far more to fix later.

04 Project Support

A trusted voice through to completion

Questions come up mid-install. Substitutions get proposed. Something looks wrong on day two. We are available throughout so you have an expert to call — one who knows your project and has no reason to tell you anything other than the truth.

What you receive

Practical deliverables, not vague guidance

Material Shortlist Report

A written document with curated tile and flooring options matched to your specific project — format, finish, rating, and where to source them.

Installer Bid Review

Line-by-line review of contractor quotes: what to question, what is missing, and which scope items matter most for a quality installation.

Project Q&A Access

Direct access to ask questions as your project moves forward — substitutions, installation concerns, or last-minute decisions answered by the same expert who briefed you.

Design Layout Guidance

Pattern direction, starting-point recommendations, and accent placement advice — so the installation plan matches the visual result you are imagining.

Trade & Retail Consulting

For contractors and flooring retailers: technical specification support, product line evaluation, and project planning consultation on a retainer or per-project basis.

Independent Specification

Written specifications for your project that any qualified installer can price and follow — removing ambiguity and protecting you from scope creep.

Homeowners

Planning a bathroom or kitchen renovation

You have a budget, a vision, and a contractor quote — but you are not sure the material choices or the price make sense. Tessera reviews all of it independently and tells you what to change before work begins.

Homeowners

Overwhelmed by material choices

You have visited three showrooms and walked out more confused each time. We narrow the options to what genuinely fits your space, lifestyle, and budget — and explain why.

Contractors

Needing technical specification support

You build the projects; we provide the flooring expertise. Specification writing, substrate assessment guidance, and material selection for clients who want something more than a standard tile job.

Flooring Retailers

Looking for independent product guidance

Evaluating a new product line, training staff on technical specs, or supporting complex customer projects. Tessera consults on a retainer or per-engagement basis.

Common questions

What people ask before engaging Tessera

Why pay for consultation when retailers offer it free?

Retailer consultations are not truly free — they are bundled into the margin on every product they sell you. The consultant's job is to move inventory, not to find you the right tile for your subfloor. Tessera charges a transparent fee specifically so we have no product relationship to protect. Our only obligation is to you.

Can you help if I have already chosen a tile and hired a contractor?

Yes. We can review your contractor bid and flag concerns, evaluate the material choice against your substrate and usage, or simply answer questions that have come up mid-project. An engagement does not have to start at the beginning to add value.

Do you work with projects outside your area?

Most of our consultation work is conducted remotely via video calls, photos, and documentation — which means we can serve homeowners and trade professionals across the United States. For projects that require a site visit, we discuss that on a case-by-case basis.

How does pricing work?

Tessera charges a straightforward consulting fee based on the scope of your project — there are no hidden product markups, referral fees, or commission arrangements of any kind. We discuss the specifics during your first conversation so you know exactly what is included before committing to anything.

What if my project is very small — a single bathroom or entryway?

Small spaces often carry the highest stakes per square foot. Getting the material, grout, and installation method wrong in a shower enclosure or a wet-area entryway is expensive to correct. We offer focused engagements sized to the project — bring it to us no matter the scale.

Do you recommend specific tile brands or suppliers?

We recommend products based on their fitness for your project, not on any supplier relationship. Where a specific brand or supplier makes sense for your needs, we will say so and explain why. We receive no referral fees or volume incentives from any manufacturer or distributor.
